This is a great design idea I saw at the Design Triennial. The little leaf fixture attached to the top of the tree soaks up sunlight during the day, then reuses that solar energy to light up at night. Supposedly these lights are already being used in Seoul, Korea. It would be cool to see them in New York! Apparently it is stressful for trees to be wrapped in twinkle lights, so this would be a neat alternative. Not to mention a great replacement for all the streetlights out there.
